WASHINGTON, DC – PharmD Live ® CEO and Geriatric Pharmacist, Cynthia C. Nwaubani, PharmD, BCGP, CMT added expert comments regarding the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services Remote Therapeutic Monitoring (RTM) section in the Proposed Medicare Physician Fee Schedule Rule for CY2022.
Dr. Nwaubani’s letter stated, “Pharmacists are one of the most accessible healthcare professionals. There are opportunities in every type of pharmacy practice to improve medication adherence. Medication nonadherence can be a tremendous barrier to having a proper therapeutic response for patients. Pharmacists can play a pivotal role in improving adherence through patient education, dosing simplification, and individualized strategies such as pill reminder systems.
“I urge CMS to allow pharmacists to provide services under the general supervision of physicians by including ‘clinical staff’ in the code description language in order to allow pharmacists to provide these services to facilitate ‘incident-to’ billing. Pharmacists currently provide Remote Physiologic Monitoring (RPM) and Chronic Care Management (CCM) services under this type of arrangement, and it has improved patient outcomes and quality of care.”
